Visiting Fullbright Research Scholar Dr. Lundy Lewis spoke to us about the societal implications of artificial intelligence.

In his talk, he explained that he programs robots to help with social interactions. Robots can carry conversations with children and adults and can also help soothe the elderly by providing comfort.

Since robots are quite expensive, Dr. Lewis tried to see if he could construct his own robot with an Amazon Echo and a dog’s chew toy – he was successful and believes this robot can help to integrate people with intellectual or developmental disabilities into society.

He goes on to explain that with the increased use of robots in society, we need to develop a symbiotic relationship with them as “we help the robots and the robots help us.”
